Doulas are knowledgeable delivery coaches. It is a
practice that has been used for centuries by many
cultures and only recently has grown in popularity in
the States.

The word “Doula”, derives from the Greek word used to
refers to a woman who personally serves another woman,
a female servant who helped the lady of the household
through labor. Today the word refers to a woman
experienced in the childbirth process who provides
informational, emotional, and physical support to a
mother before, during and after
labor.

Although Doulas do not
provide clinical care such as monitor blood pressure,
heart rates or vaginal exams, they do ensure the
comfort of the mother through coaching, massage,
positioning, etc., to help ease the labor progress.
Doulas act as the mother’s advocate during labor
obtaining information and ensuring the mother’s needs
and wishes are meet by communicating with the medical
staff.

In the United States and Canada, Doulas are not
required to be certified, however certification is
available through several organizations.
